DELF B1

Discovery

The DELF B1 (Diplôme d’Études en Langue Française) is an official diploma that certifies an intermediate level of proficiency in French according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). At this level, the user becomes independent: they are able to understand and follow a discussion, express their opinion, and cope with unexpected situations in everyday life.

Important for applicants for French citizenship:

Possession of the DELF B1 diploma exempts the holder from any language test to prove their level of French (decree of October 11, 2011).

Listening comprehension

The test consists of answering comprehension questions based on three recorded documents, played twice for each excerpt.

Reading comprehension

The test covers two short written documents. These are:

  • Extract useful information related to a given task,
  • analyze the content of a document of general interest.

The test consists of expressing a personal opinion on a general topic through writing, such as an essay, letter, or article.

Speaking

The oral exam takes place in three parts:

  • Directed interview,
  • Interactive exercise,
  • Expression of a point of view based on a triggering document.
