Last week marked the final activity of the session for CILFA students: a bowling outing in a great atmosphere.
After the equipment and rules were explained, the students played two fairly close games. Some were trying this sport (or game)—which was invented in the 19th century in the United States—for the first time, while others had played it before. Samphors and Ayuko won the first two games. Yuko and Ayuko again won the next two games.
The atmosphere was great during this final educational activity of the session. The students wrapped up the afternoon with a drink and, as usual, practiced French as a foreign language, talking in particular about what they planned to do during their upcoming vacation.
Some information about the bowling alley:
- The objective of this game is to knock down ten pins with a fairly heavy ball. Scoring depends on the number of pins remaining. The player gets two throws. If all the pins are knocked down on the first throw, it’s called a strike; if all the pins are knocked down in two throws, it’s called a spare. If any pins are still standing after the second throw, the score is the number of pins knocked down.
- There are three holes in the balls: the largest one for the thumb, and the other two for the middle and ring fingers.
- Ski boots are special: the heel is made of a plastic that doesn’t leave marks on the wood, and the sole is made of leather.
- The approach consists of three normal steps and one sliding step. There’s no point in running because the ball won’t go any faster.
If you want to go out in Annecy, head to the Bowl (a complex that also houses a restaurant and a nightclub: http://www.le-bowl.com/).
There is another bowling alley in Sevrier where you can also play pool: http://www.bowling-sevrier.com/
