The nice weather is back in Annecy, and the first summer session is about to begin! After giving you a few suggestions for staying warm this winter over a good cup of coffee, it’s time to step outside and explore our beautiful city! CILFA has put together a list of must-do activities in Annecy to enjoy between French classes!
In Annecy’s Old Town
Annecy and its canals
The city of Annecy is famous for its distinctive architecture and the canals that wind through the old town. It’s even nicknamed “the Venice of the Alps”! Strolling through the narrow cobblestone streets, walking along the canals, and taking that iconic photo of the Palais de l’Isle are some of the must-do tourist activities!
It is also in Old Annecy where you’ll find the vast majority of restaurants, souvenir shops, grocery stores, delis, and cheese shops—all selling the region’s finest products. For an even more authentic experience, head to the Old Town market every Tuesday, Friday, and Sunday morning from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.
At the start of each session, CILFA organizes a city tour with the students.

Annecy Castle
If you’re in the old town, you can easily walk to the castle through charming, picturesque little streets—but be warned, it’s a steep climb! The tour lasts about an hour and also gives you the chance to see temporary exhibits. The most impressive part, however, is the view of the lake from the terrace!
CILFA regularly organizes guided tours of the Château d’Annecy with the students.

Bonus: Feel like a little ice cream?
Strolling through the streets of the old town is nice. Doing it while eating ice cream is even better! The Glacier des Alpes is considered one of the best ice cream shops in France. It offers more than 45 flavors, ranging from the most classic to the most original. The hardest part is choosing!

Around Lake Annecy
Lake Annecy
When talking about Annecy, it’s impossible not to mention its lake and its crystal-clear water! Stretching 14.6 km and surrounded by mountains, it’s truly the city’s main tourist attraction. Come discover for yourself the clarity of the water and the beauty of the area with a short stroll along the Pâquier, through the Jardins de l’Europe, and across the must-see Pont des Amours. To make the most of your visit, be sure to take a break at one of the many beaches around the lake or rent a pedal boat, a motorboat (no license required), or a stand-up paddleboard.
And for those looking for a more elegant and unique experience, opt for a mini-cruise on the “Libellule,” Annecy’s restaurant boat.
Let’s get some exercise!
For the more active among you, you can cycle around Lake Annecy—a distance of about 42 kilometers—mostly on bike paths. It’s the perfect way to enjoy the many views of the lake, discover secluded little beaches, and avoid the crowds, especially in the summer.
If you enjoy cycling, Frédéric, a professor at CILFA, organizes the CilfaCyclette every summer—a 4-day cycling trip through the region.

Are you interested in paragliding?
Do you love thrills and want to experience the lake in a whole new way? Then paragliding over the lake is perfect for you! In Annecy, several companies offer this activity, but keep in mind that flights usually depart from the Col de la Forclaz or Talloires, and it’s best to book in advance.

The Annecy Lake Festival du
If you’re in Annecy during the summer, the Fête du Lac is a major event you won’t want to miss! Every year, on the first Saturday in August, Annecy residents and tourists gather on the lakefront for a spectacular fireworks display combining music and fireworks. Lasting about two hours, it’s the largest show of its kind in Europe. Tickets are required, so be sure to reserve yours in advance!
