CILFA at Montrottier Castle and the Gorges du Fier

On Friday, September 8, CILFA students took advantage of the beautiful weather to enjoy a picnic featuring local specialties in the gardens of the Château de Montrottier, which they then toured. The afternoon concluded with a visit to the magnificent Gorges du Fier.

The picnic consisted of local cheeses and cold cuts, wines and fruit juices from Savoie, fresh bread, and seasonal fruit.

After enjoying a hearty meal, the students climbed to the top of the keep and took in a splendid view of the surrounding area. A guide then led the group through various richly decorated rooms in this 13th-century castle. Located about ten kilometers from Annecy, it houses one of the most beautiful cabinets of curiosities in the Savoie region.

The afternoon continued with a tour of the spectacular Gorges of the Fier.

The Fier is one of the major rivers in Haute-Savoie.

Located 10 km from Annecy, it has carved out one of the most spectacular examples of water erosion—the Gorges du Fier—which is ranked among the greatest natural wonders of the Alps.

Since 1869, the gorge has been accessible to the public via a 252-meter-long footbridge suspended 25 meters above the river.

At the end of the tour, the following are displayed in a specially arranged room:

  • Significant events in our region from 1860 to the present.
  • Photos of the major floods and of their consequences on the site of the gorges.
