CILFA visited the Animation Film Museum

Last week, a group of CILFA students visited the Animation Film Museum in Annecy.

To kick off this educational activity, the students practiced their French as a foreign language over coffee while discussing animated films they were familiar with. The conversations were very interesting because of the students’ diverse backgrounds (the United States, Germany, Great Britain, Japan).

Next, the group visited this museum, located within the Annecy Conservatory of Art and History. The museum offers a broad overview of the history of animation, ranging from the origins of animated film to the latest techniques in this highly dynamic and rapidly evolving field. Since the museum is interactive, the students were able to explore various techniques. At the end of the visit, in a dedicated room, the group created a short animated film together with a few children. This allowed the students to realize just how many scenes need to be filmed to create an animated film, even a very short one.

Finally, the students watched several animated short films from various sources and created using different techniques (drawing on paper, drawing on film, drawing on celluloid, cut-out animation, modeling clay, painting, puppets, object cinema, and 2D and 3D imagery).

The animated film industry is very important to the city of Annecy. In fact, the international festival for this genre has been held there since 1960, and it is the equivalent of the Cannes Film Festival for animation.

In 2018, it will take place from June 11 to 16. Eighty-seven countries will be represented this year. More than 500 films will be screened in 11 theaters, and 29 awards will be presented. During festival week, four large outdoor screens are set up, allowing the general public to watch animated films for free at various locations throughout the city, including the Pâquier and the castle courtyard. Every year, CILFA students attend a screening of short films during the International Animated Film Festival and then discuss the films.
